Archive for February, 2009

As a new year begins, there are many poker players that are looking forward to 2009 and hope that poker will be able to match and exceed the developments that the game has experienced over the last 12 months.

Many big tournaments have been won, the youngest ever World Series of Poker (WSOP) champ has been crowned in addition to a rise on the previous years WSOP numbers and prize money. More poker tournaments have been instigated worldwide and online, suggesting that 2008 saw a substantial growth in the number of players partaking in poker and as a consequence, growth in money within and surrounding the industry.

With the additional media exposure, especially from television, comes an increase in sponsors. Players give more back into the game than ever through these lucrative sponsorship deals.

While the world is coming to terms with a worldwide economic crisis, it seems poker has escaped the worst of it, with poker players turning out in great numbers, perhaps more so online. 2009 promises to be another strong year for poker.

This is a six hour long poker television program that is broadcast six nights a week. The show made its first appearance on TV in 2007 and was presented by Shana Hiatt and it was to be hosted for the next 3 seasons by Marianela Pereyra until Leeann Tweeden took over for the fourth season and Oliver Nejad has been responsible for commentary since the program began. This program is part of NBC's late night viewing programs. In Canada the program is screened during the afternoons and late night on Rogers Sportsnet. In german the show is on DSF every weekday at 5:30 p.m, and in Latin America it is aired on Fox Sports only on Saturdays at 11:00 p.m. The series is designed to host six poker professionals who will engage in a No-Limit Texas hold'em mini tournament. There is a weekly prize money of up to $120 000 in a winner takes all fashion. Players have to pay a $20 000 buy-in fee, and by the end of the week on Friday the winner would have been determined and the weekend show on Saturdays is a director's show that shows action from the experts in the 5 previous days and the first two episodes of the season show bleeps and blunders.

The format of the game is as follows: blinds start at $100/$200 and slowly increase. Commentaries are limited to allow listeners to hear more of the table talk among players, who will all be wearing mouth pieces that allow them to be heard. The game began with different experiments with different games with different formats including 2 weeks of cash game play and a week of double elimination heads up battle between the first four winners of National Heads-up poker championship.

The show has had a somewhat huge success in the US as it has managed to attract a large audience amongst adults between the ages 18 and 34. In the previous events such as the first episode players were said to be talking too much such that they made a lot of noise as one player Phil Hellmuth lashed out at Shawn Sheikhan because he was too noisy. It was seen that while the game was going on Phil wanted to decide whether to go all-in against Annie Duke and he Phil had an Ace of hearts and a 10 of hearts while Annie had a K of spades and a k of hearts. Phil threatened not to play again unless the show put in place rules that bar players from making noise when other players are making important decisions. This incident made the producers of the show to put up rules that state that if a player wishes to have silence at the table when faced with a tough decision, the players just has to inform the dealer and the dealer takes charge of notifying the rest of the players. Failure by players to abide to this rule will result in a time out period of one lap for offending players with blinds being forfeited during this penalty time.
